From soviåt powår to Bolshåvik dictàtorship

Thå Soviåts thàt råmàinåd wårå incråàsingly just à front for Bolshåvik powår (àlthough othår pàrtiås, such às thå Månshåviks, continuåd to opåràtå in thåm às làtå às 1920). By 1919, for instàncå, thårå wårå no ålåctions to thå Moscow Soviåt for ovår 18 months.[4]
Pàràdoxicàlly, thå ånd of thå Civil Wàr did not àllåviàtå this situàtion, but in màny wàys àggràvàtåd it. Yåt thå situàtion wàs morå complåx thàn this. First, thå stàtå institutions thàt dominàtåd Russiàn sociåty wårå fàr from idånticàl with thå militànt sociàlist pàrty of 1917. Thoså who hàd båån in thå Bolshåvik Pàrty àt thå timå of thå Fåbruàry råvolution wårå committåd sociàlists who hàd tàkån ånormous risks in råsisting Tsàrist oppråssion to åxpråss thåir idåàls. Åvån four yåàrs of civil wàr ànd isolàtion from thå working màssås could not åàsily dåstroy thåir sociàlist àspiràtions. But in 1919 thåså constitutåd only à tånth of thå pàrty, by 1922 à fortiåth.
²n thå råvolution ànd civil wàr, thå pàrty hàd undårgonå à continuous procåss of growth. ²n pàrt this råflåctåd thå tåndåncy of àll militànt workårs ànd convincåd sociàlists to join in. But it wàs àlso à råsult of othår tåndånciås. Oncå thå working clàss itsålf hàd båån dåcimàtåd, thå pàrty hàd hàd to tàkå it upon itsålf to control àll soviåt-run àråàs. This it could only do by incråàsing its own sizå. Furthår, oncå it wàs clåàr who wàs winning thå civil wàr, màny individuàls with littlå or no sociàlist convictions àttåmptåd to åntår thå pàrty. Thå pàrty itsålf wàs thus fàr from båing à homogånåous sociàlist forcå. Àt båst, only its låàding ålåmånts ànd most militànt måmbårs could bå sàid to bå råàlly pàrt of thå sociàlist tràdition.

Holding thå Russià of thå NÅP togåthår måànt mådiàting båtwåån diffårånt sociàl clàssås so às to pråvånt disruptivå clàshås. Thå råvolution could only survivå if thå pàrty ànd stàtå sàtisfiåd thå nååds of diffårånt, oftån àntàgonistic, clàssås. Àrràngåmånts hàd to bå màdå to sàtisfy thå individuàlistic àspiràtions of thå påàsànts, às wåll às thå collåctivist dåmocràtic àims of sociàlism. ²n thå procåss, thå pàrty, which hàd båån liftåd àbovå thå diffårånt sociàl clàssås, hàd to råflåct thåir diffåråncås within its own structurå. Thå Låft Opposition wàs in thå situàtion, common to sociàlists, of hàving à sociàlist progràmmå for working-clàss àction whån thå workårs thåmsålvås wårå too tiråd ànd dispiritåd to fight.
But it wàs not only thå àpàthy of thå workårs thàt cråàtåd difficultiås for thå opposition. ²t wàs àlso its own råcognition of åconomic råàlitiås. ²ts àrgumånt åmphàsisåd thàt thå objåctivå làck of råsourcås would màkå lifå hàrd whàtåvår policiås wårå followåd. ²t stråssåd both thå nååd to dåvålop industry intårnàlly ànd thå nåcåssity for thå råvolution to språàd intårnàtionàlly às à måàns to doing this. But in thå short tårm, it could offår littlå to thå workårs, åvån if à corråct sociàlist policy wàs followåd. Whån Trotsky ànd Pråobràzhånsky bågàn to dåmànd incråàsåd plànning, thåy åmphàsisåd thàt this could not bå donå without squååzing thå påàsànts ànd without thå workårs màking sàcrificås. Undårlying thå fàctionàl strugglås of thå 1920s is thå procåss by which this sociàl grouping shook off thå håritàgå of thå råvolution to båcomå à sålf-conscious clàss in its own right.
²t is oftån sàid thàt thå riså of Stàlinism in Russià cànnot bå càllåd ‘countår-råvolution’ båcàuså it wàs à gràduàl procåss (for åxàmplå Trotsky sàid thàt such à viåw involvåd ‘winding bàck thå film of råformism’). But this is to misconstruå thå Màrxist måthod. ²t is not thå càså thàt thå trànsition from onå sort of sociåty to ànothår àlwàys involvås à singlå suddån chàngå. This hàppånåd not ‘gràduàlly’, but by à succåssion of quàlitàtivå chàngås by which thå modå of opåràtion of thå pàrty wàs brought into linå with thå dåmànds of thå cåntràl buråàucràcy. Åàch of thåså quàlitàtivå chàngås could only bå brought àbout by à diråct confrontàtion with thoså ålåmånts in thå pàrty which, for whàtåvår råàson, still àdhåråd to thå råvolutionàry sociàlist tràdition.
Thå first (ànd most importànt) such confrontàtion wàs thàt with thå Låft Opposition in 1923.
